So he was born...still nameless...but a tiny little being...still unable to stand on his four legs...He came out in the pasture...with out the commotion of all of us around...and Chloe patiently allowed us to train him to feed and gave us all a turn milking her...without any fuss...but moo'd lowly wanting to be with her calf...as soon as she was allowed she began licking him...warming him up...he is a sturdy fellow...attempted numerous times to stand up...by morning he may be on his own 4 feet. It is a new life. Today a calf is born...on Sunday the pigs are slaughtered...there seems to be a constant balance of life and death here. For the potatoes to thrive we must kill the potatoe beetles...one at a time...for humans to eat pork, bacon, ham...we must slaughter the pigs...and yet we plant seeds and they rise out of the ground...and we watch as a cow mothers her calf into this harsh world...I am struck by how real life is here...everything is rich and tangible...and the air when the wind blows off the hills smells of summer sweetness and rain...
