And i loved it...brought back in time 100 years...we watched the farmer and the apprentices cultivate a field using 3 strong work horses...What is the benefit to farming with horses? They do not compress the soil as much...the are quiet unlike the noise of a tractor...and they give to the land through their manure....but what i liked best about why David said he liked using horses is because when working with a living thing it changes you and grows you. The horses are not merely a tool...they have minds of their own. I felt drawn to the horses and the farm I saw there...hmm...maybe horse powered farming will be next for me..
But our farm is thriving...I made collard greens this week...and we had Rhubarbade to drink...and strawberries on our spinach salad...meals have been looking up...the tomatoes are now covered in a golden blanket of straw and their stakes are in the ground...ready to be tied up...oh tomato season is coming...their scent fills the air...

In my ecology class last year, I learned that somewhere (not sure which country), if loggers want to cut trees in certain areas, they are only permitted to do so if they use animal labor. it is an effort to preserve trees cause it naturaly slows the loggers down, cut down on noise/ air pollution/ land pollution (the government can avoid putting down more paving...which is good because if they do not have to pave remote areas for machinery to be brought in, there is not pavement to add to runnoff from the roads which inturn adds to land pollution). A creative way to get the materials needed from the land with out destroying the land! I thought it was a good idea....though the animals supplying the power might not agree! - lesle
