Hawk Mountain

This is Hawk Mountain.  A child's playground in the winter months.  On season hawks, eagles, Kestrells and other birds of prey soar above the rounded hills of the appalachians, but I have not seen them.  Since I was small this is where we came in winter.  Where do you go with 4 children, that is free, and will allow them freedom to roam and explore and use up their energy?  As the hawks soar in spring we had free range in winter.  No crowds, no park fees, just us and the open blue skies.  And so this is a tradition.  In winter my spirit always wants to go to this place.  And again, my parents and I made the pilgrimage up to the top.  And were greeted by a glider, mimicking the patterns of the birds, soaring above us.  Maybe one day I will go and watch the birds who glide off the air currents, but this is a sacred place in the winter months, no crowds, just barren rocks and trees.  It seems this great hill would loose something if witnessed with the bird watching crowds.  I do not need to see the hawks to know why they come to this place, in winter, the silence and solitude of this place speaks for itself.

oh kate... you've made me homesick for our home and our childhood. Thank you for sharing the pictures. I'm so glad you guys got to go up there while you were home :) The paths were still too icy when i was at home with mom and dad and it made me so sad. Thankyou for preserving our hawk mountain on the internet. There is nothing quite so lovely and familiar as those mountain trails... and always new adventures to be sought :)
