there are significant moments in life that are unexpected. yestserday i stepped into a japanese buddhist temple in the heart of dc. i went with my sister, who is soon leaving to cross the country and begin a new life far away from the world i live in. we stepped into this other world, rhythmic drums beating, prayers engulfing us, to visit a friend from the catholic worker. outside dc was moving. full of people coming home from work. the homeless on the streets. people going out to eat and bustling about. talk began about guantanamo, hunger strikes. a 1 and a half year old stood holding his play guitar in perfect formation. community members drifted in and out of the warm room. within this space my heart began to flutter, to stir from a 2 year nap. amongst community and talk of change, my heart felt pulled toward a world i have run from. this is the life i desire, it is good and full of the presence of God.
