BUY LOCAL

This evening, my roommate and I went to a local showing of Asparagus: A Stalkumentary. It spoke of the asparagus industry in Michigan, how it is being destroyed by the import of asparagus from Peru, the U.S. did this to get rid of Peru's export of cocaine...aparently this has been successful, though we are pumping 60 million dollars into Peru to help them grow asparagus and destroying Oceana, MI livelihood. Afterwards a farmer from Vermont spoke...and he spoke with the slow sadness of someone who has worked long and hard and cared for his land and is having trouble competing with big name organics like, Organic Valley. He spoke about how at the Co-op where his eggs are sold, Organic Valley's eggs are sold $2 less. His weathered skin and broken spirit reaffirmed the need for myself and all of us to support as best we can our local growers. I do not know how some of them are making it. I do not know how I will make it, but I hope we can all be drawn closer to the land of our communities by eating the food that is grown there.

Our Asparagus are popping through the soil!
