Today we tasted our first little bit of asparagus that has shot through the ground. Cooked it up with some eggs for breakfast. This is our first bit of greens of the season. I think all of our bodies are craving greens. Eating in season is lovely, but April is rough, winter rations are almost gone and we are hoping the rest of the veggies up! It has been a busy week. We covered our hoop house with plastic, pulling the edges tight so the wind will not take it away, we moved the cows to greener pastures...I leading them with feed, Lucy, our big mother of a cow, grunting and running and Don saying "be careful it could turn into a stampede". We potted on peppers, cut potatoes, laid black plastic (an intense job, which on a windy day causes many more problems....but it is down) We moved large piece of trees into a burn pile...I had that feeling of being a logger. The beauty to small farming is that everyday on the farm there is something new that needs to be done...and I never know what the day will bring. But this afternoon in the midst of laying down straw between path ways my spirit was feeling weary. The hay is prickly and was scratching my skin and i felt irritable. I went to the greenhouse to do my end of day waterings and came out to a world bathed in gold. And suddenly the irritations of the day did not matter. I believe there is a redeeming quality to the last light of day. It calms the heart and renews the spirit. As the light fell I thought this is good.
(take note of the straw...all laid by hand:)

Your pictures continue to give a great glimpse into this foreign world of farming. The lettuce and kale is growing like crazy in our little urban greenhouse :)

Projects look very interesting, the landscape and farm are beautiful, and you look very happy. I am so excited you are having this experience.
