Facing the pigs...

Each morning I wake at 5:45...get ready and begin the day with the animals. This seems like and is a pleasant endeavor. The Sun is rising, the world feels fresh and new, and the first species I really interact with are farm animals. And I love the ritual. But the pigs, well...it seems we are not doing so well together. When you feed the pigs they are hungry...there are 8 120 lb pigs waiting for their food. Now I like to think I am brave and wont be intimidated by these beast, which I use to think were rather sweet and pleasant, probably from reading Charlotte's Web. But in the morning, as I go to meet them, they swarm... trying to get their food, today nearly knocking me down, my heart racing as I saw my life ending face down in a pig pile. I am on a mission to figure out how to relate to these beings. I too know that hunger can make one agitated ...but the pigs seem to take it a bit far.
Today out in the fields we are preparing the strawberries, removing straw from their winter bodies, waking them up to the spring sunshine...the sky is radiant and it was wonderful to see the first bits of green life pushing through soil. My spirit is delighting in the slow pace here...tomorrow it rains, but today I say this is a very good life. And tonight will end with the pigs again...I hope we may come to a better understanding.

Your view really is beautiful and picturesque. It really seems to be the romantic image of farming.

That's not your bed on your front porch is it?

Dear sweet katie,

I forgot about this blog somehow, and am delighted to learn about your first week now. I hope you find a good way to coexist with the pigs... some animals are easier kindred spirits than others. Did you get something in the mail??? I love you!

Where were you sitting when you took the photo of the stream - looks like a great place to be!

Hey, do you get to care for the pigs on Saturday and Sunday?
