The Sun Keeps Shining

It has been a busy week...laying irrigation lines...as the weather has been warming up. In farming we so quickly go from great joy at lovely warm days, where we are grateful for the weather....to worry about the lack of rain. So today we prepared beds like crazy....as our seedlings in the greenhouse are popping out of their containers...ready, before schedule, to get into the ground. We can hope they will do okay, but there is no sign of rain in the next few days. We had a special treat of blueberries with our breakfast pancakes a reminder that spring will come again. Today we put lettuce into the ground....in about 5 weeks it will be ready to be picked...I will be delighted to see greens. Yesterday...I successfully moved Chole our Dairy cow back into her pen. This may not seem like a great feat but Chole is currently an addict to grain....she is pregnant and needs to gain wait so she is given grain every morning. And she loves it. She stands every moring at the gate, waiting to be let out...and this is not because she is so fond of me...then she practically gallops over to her grain. But getting her back in with the other cows has been impossible for me...Don, has saved me everyday...until yesterday...when ,after much prodding...and loving...and nudging...and patience she came...I realized that I did not know what to do with an animal...what boundaries do you set up for a large beast...there are no choices to be given...so I resorted to petting and loving her up...seemed to be rather affective...today with the help of Lucy our very large beef cow, mooing...Chole came rapidly. Lucy is wonderful...solid and a don't mess with me personality. They are all lovely beasts. Now my eyes are heavy...and the night is warm so I will need a few less layers as I sleep. And the moon is so bright I do not need a light to get to my cabin...The world is a glorious place.

Chole and Lukey

Our Chicks in action...today we moved them into a larger space...for the past week I always found 3 brazen chicks who had escaped from their pen!

THE COMPOST:)-we harvested it this week

The worms...the life blood of the farm:)

Frogs eggs...a bit unrelated..but quite fascinating...Gabriella, the 4 year old here, came running up one day holding these eggs, saying "I saved the eggs" our vernal pool had dried up and after a member had educated us on wood frogs and their egg laying practices in vernal pools, Gabriella saved them when she saw the water was all gone...we may have pet tadpoles soon:)

Hey, Kate, they are some big fat worms in that worm bin...I thought thy are supposed to be the little bitty guys - or have these guys had so much of that good organic food that they just expanded? We were out walking this evening and we must have been able to see the same moon as you - ours was bright and beautiful, and kept our homeward path well lit as well. Such a big world, but isn't it neat that we can share the same moon!

Lucy is so furry! What kind of cow is she? And I am so excited about your frogs. You have to take a picture if they hatch, okay? Congrats on your success with Chloe. :)

Why would you want to deal with all that when you could be sitting behind a desk?

Just kidding. :) I'm envious of your adventure & all of your new animal friends. Keep on keepin on.
